Talcan Distillery

Speyside

Following the success of the design of Lagg distillery, we were invited to enter a competition to design a concept for a whisky and gin distillery and visitor centre in the heart of Speyside.  The client asked that the proposal reflected the spirit of Speyside which was encapsulated within the surrounding environment of the proposed site, a long-established Speyside estate. Our aim was to provide a well-conceived space for distilling whisky that fitted its environment and celebrated the heritage of the surrounding area.

Whilst the main purpose of the facility endeavour was, of course, to produce whisky, it was important to the client that visitor experience and welcome should be exceptional, unique and unforgettable. The design was inspired by the setting, the production of Whisky and Gin and the proximity to the River Spey and it’s surrounding topography. We arrived at the final design influenced both by the twisting movement of the Scottish salmon and by setting the proposal far into the existing topography of the site to encourage a connection between the natural environment and the architecture of the building.
